Hodgkin Lymphoma Survivors Have Higher Risk for Cardiovascular Diseases

JAMA: Survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma appear to be at higher risk for cardiovascular diseases. Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a curable cancer with 10-year survival rates exceeding 80 percent. Treatment for HL has been associated with increased risks for other cancers and cardiovascular diseases, and those later cardiovascular complications may be the consequence of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in HL treatment, according to the study background.

Treatment guidelines for pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma

ASTRO: The International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group (ILROG) has issued a guideline that outlines the use of 3-D computed tomography (CT)-based radiation therapy planning and volumetric image guidance to more effectively treat pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma and to reduce the radiation dose to normal tissue, thus decreasing the risk of late side effects. The guideline will be published in the March-April issue of Practical Radiation Oncology (PRO), the clinical practice journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

Introduction

Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that originates from B-lymphocytes of the immune system and the most common type is marked by the presence of a very specific type of cell known as the Hodgkin Reed-Sternberg cell. Once a uniformly fatal disease, today Hodgkin lymphoma is routinely curable. This knol provides a history of the disease and then goes on to describe the typical symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis after treatment.
