Vienna: There are more than 670
million people worldwide who are obese – with serious consequences for
themselves and an enormous cost to the healthcare system. A recent
MedUni Vienna study, conducted jointly with the Institute of
Pharmaceutical Economic Research (Evelyn Walter) and the Austrian
Society of Bariatric Surgery and led by Gerhard Prager (Department of
Surgery), shows that bariatric surgery, such as a gastric bypass, for
example, not only saves a lot of money but also improves quality-of-life
and extends life expectancy. On 26 May 2018, there will be an action
day for obesity patients and interested parties in MedUni Vienna's
Lecture Center in Vienna General Hospital.

How can we use technology to support patients after bariatric surgery?
Kaiser Permanente: Bariatric surgery is a potentially life-changing procedure that can
help ward off chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. But
going through the surgery itself is only part of the journey. Achieving
and maintaining a healthy weight after surgery usually depends on
adopting healthier eating and physical activity habits in the long term. We all know that’s easier said than done. But with the recent boom in
mobile-health technologies such as activity trackers, lifestyle support
for patients who’ve had bariatric surgery is moving in a whole new
direction.

Gastric band surgery significantly reduces health risks in overweight people with diabetes: study finds
Melbourne: A long-term study by Monash University researchers – the first of its
kind – has found that gastric band surgery has significant benefits for
moderately overweight people with type 2 diabetes. Previous studies
have focused on obese people. The five-year study by Monash’s Centre for Obesity Research and Education
(CORE), found that gastric or Lap-band surgery improved the patients’
chances of diabetes remission, reduced the need for diabetes medication
and dramatically enhanced their quality of life.
Diabetes, along with obesity, is occurring in epidemic proportions. According to Diabetes Australia, an estimated 1.7 million Australians currently have the disease. Nearly 90 per cent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

Longer-Term Follow-up Shows Greater Type 2 Diabetes Remission for Bariatric Surgery Compared to Lifestyle Intervention
JAMA: Among obese participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus, bariatric surgery with 2 years of a low-level lifestyle intervention resulted in more disease remission than did lifestyle intervention alone, according to a study published online by JAMA Surgery. It remains to be established whether bariatric surgery is a durable and effective treatment for type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and how bariatric surgery compares with intensive lifestyle modification and medication management with respect to T2DM-related outcomes. As demonstrated in observational studies and several small randomized clinical trials of short duration, T2DM is greatly improved after bariatric surgery. However, more information is needed about the longer-term effectiveness and risks of all types of bariatric surgical procedures compared with lifestyle and medical management for those with T2DM and obesity, according to background information in the article.
